How I work

  • Working with me means I commit to spending time with you to find out exactly what it is you need to achieve and tailor what I do to help you achieve that. I don’t bring in a preconceived framework or model and impose it on your organisation.
    • Working with me means you are interested not only in process and frameworks. You are also interested in your people and giving them the time and space to share their views about the future of your organisation. If you believe in top down strategy development, then I’m not the right person for you.
      • Working with me means being open to challenging your perspectives about the future of your organisation and being prepared to listen to divergent views. If you want ‘the answer’ in the shortest amount of time, then I’m not the right person for you.
        • Working with me means you will get the latest in foresight research and practice. I have a research led practice that aims to give you practical outcomes that are framed by the best global thinking about how to grapple with change shaping the future that I can find. This sometimes mean some unconventional methods and approaches to stretch thinking and expand horizons about change.

        Why work with me?

Maree Conway croppedI work with people who have open minds about the future and recognise the need to think in new ways about what’s possible. You are ready to move beyond the status-quo and understand more deeply the nature of change shaping their organisation’s future to create proactive responses today. If that’s you, get in touch.

My expertise centres around environmental scanning, scenario development and action, and helping reframe conventional strategy development processes by infusing them with foresight methods.

I have been helping people use foresight since 1999 and have recognised expertise in providing resources, facilitation, learning and training services to help people embed foresight into organisational decision making. See more on publications and presentations pages or scroll down to see some of my recent work, testimonials, and some clients with whom I’ve collaborated.

I focus on strategy development because these processes usually bring people together to – theoretically – think about the future of their organisations and foresight methods facilitate this thinking. Most people get in touch because they are dissatisfied with the outcomes of their last planning process, or need some specific training to build skills and knowledge – they are ready to do things differently. I also work with individuals who want to build their own foresight capacity to help them be a futures ready leader in their organisation.

I am collaborative, flexible and informal in my approach. I deliver high quality, customised, useful and practical outcomes for people and organisations.

I work on my own for some projects and collaborate with other foresight professionals for larger projects. If you prefer to work with large organisations rather than individuals, contact the Centre for Australian Foresight and tell them I sent you.

        Recent Work

What people say about my work

The scenarios have been a very important contribution to our strategic planning. We have enjoyed the association with Maree, whose work has been of a very high standard indeed and delivered, under pressure, in a timely manner.
Professor Chris Cocklin, James Cook University
Maree was clearly expert in the scenario planning approach to strategic planning, she was open and honest in her dealings with us and provided excellent reference material and support to questions…The major workshops were under control, planned and managed very well. I admire Maree’s ability to distill data into manageable units and draw order from the chaos.
        Michelle Hayward, Kangan Institute
The experience was a very positive experience. One of the issues for any organisation is always that of staff who may not wish to come along for the journey and ours is no different in this respect. All staff participated in the workshop. However their involvement in the scanning process was very patchy and perhaps did not work as well as hoped. Adjustments to the approach were made by Thinking Futures as a result which was great. A number of staff commented on the usefulness of the approach. The outcomes will provide a good stepping stone for moving forward.
A highly positive experience – it was a pleasure to work with a consultant who was always looking to value add what they had promised to deliver.
Maree’s deep knowledge of the University sector and understanding of trends in libraries was particularly useful, including her contribution to the environmental scanning phase. Her facilitation of the process and final presentation of the report was professional and achieved a good outcome that I was looking for.
Maree’s initial presentation on trends was a great talking point – her knowledge about the sector helped get people “on side” very quickly, and as a result discussions were enthusiastic and productive…We received some good feedback from participants – I’d definitely look at getting Maree in again next year to do a longer, more focused workshop.

Just a note to thank you for a fantastic presentation. I really enjoyed it, it’s really got me thinking…
Dr Maryam Omair, Edith Cowan University
Thanks again for a great, thought provoking presentation.
I really enjoyed your presentation. It was one of the better ones of the conference and was very thought provoking.
